Sail Chat-Sunday 30th March

Comes in like a Lamb and out like a Lion! That was our rather wicked North Westerly and the end of March! Richard Page our learned Race Officer and his highly qualified ADO Ben set a most sensible course with a short shifty beat to a low upriver mark, then a reach run in the real windy bits down to J, then H port Middlesex across to H Surrey to starboard. Only three takers AM Tim/Claude and James in Comets and me with Paul in the Enterprise. Nice quick race but rather demanding, especially in the gusts off the graveyard. Only 6 seconds twixt 1st and 2nd so close racing, assisted, no doubt by sailor rust.

PM saw the wind back a bit turning the same course into more of a run but still very frisky. Ian with Sarah and me with Paul, slight contretemps at the windward mark but penalty taken. Considerable lead by me/Paul, on the penultimate leg, sacrificed to first a gust, a capsize and an overtake! Great show by Comets Phill with Sammy, George, Tim and James. One GP Kevin and Maddy, difficult to believe, some gear failures but a finish. Stu and Nicola in the Merlin, bravely flying the kite. So a good show all round.

Time Keeping by Maureen and Sue, falling about and ringing buzzers, then waving at competitors. Super tea, two cake award, by Chris and Nicky. A small person rang the bar bell heartily but declined drinks all round. Ian made a few announcements, we all sang to Philip but his age remained a secret. Then it was beer and wine time.

And welcome to the new Club Boat- Comet Versa 333- Still to be named!

Phill
