The Mid Thames Trophy happened on Saturday. It was sailed in a very well mannered way and well organised by our Hon Sailing Secretary. A full report will appear from another hack later on (see Yachts and Yachting). All I will note is that the chocolate boat with zero free board flew away.
Sunday had the same beautiful weather with 25 degrees and a, at times, sprightly easterly. It was the first of our open days which attracted eleven people giving us eight new members under the concessionary, taste and see, entry scheme. Only one taker in the morning, David in his Solo, as ever setting an example. There were other boats out giving visitors a sample sail.
In the afternoon GP’s John and Ali, George and Chris, Derek with Mary and Kevin with Ra.
In the Merlins were Stuart with trainee spinnaker operative Sophie and John with daughter Livvy, John sails the only boat at the club which enjoys a skirt, it is not a mini!
No Handicaps out Peter resting due to digging, David worn out and Ben in another fleet.
The Enterprise fleet had Jane with Amelia, Ben with Dad crewing, Stuart and Larissa (welcome back both) and Ellen helming with fat boy Phill. Hampton at it’s best with a lovely wind and sensible courses set by race team Trevor and Mack. Also out bimbling were Brit Family Dalby with a lot in the boat. Ben celebrated his race by exiting into the river!
Fortnum standard tea from Alexandra, from boat to tea in one swift move, Michaela and the mercurial Kevin, occasionally. Gallic tones addressed the fleets from the box and Alison was there too. Mack, who can work all the gadgets, ran the bar.
Our thoughts must be with Brian who is sailing the channel in a small boat, the ‘roughing it climbers’ in their luxury glamping van with en suite and Hywell sailing his Yawl in Salcombe with that slender crew John Heath. May they all return safely.
Sorry if I missed anyone but it’s hot. Blog will be done by sub for the next two weeks as I enjoy the Ionian, ouzo limon, metaxa cherry, moussakas and Zorba’s dance.
