The day before official Spring brought us scudding black clouds and a rather fierce south westerly shown on the guru as 15 mph with gusts of 29.
Only two takers in the morning the Hon Sailing Sec. setting an example in his Solo and me with a dauntless Ra in the Enterprise. Sympathetic course set by Howard and John, E to I with no gybes. The Solo was soon well away riding out the gusts with aplomb. The reduced rig Enterprise gradually fell behind as the helm fumbled and dropped bits of rope. Finally after about 40 minutes he plonked his crew and himself in. Super recovery by Ra when she found her feet with a grande emboite’ onto the hull. Solo first Enterprise a wet second.
Lovely lunch with leftovers from the excellent fare from the ‘Fitting Out Party’ the night before and a large rum.
Massive gust during lunch nearly blowing Brian over and my boat off its trolley.
In the afternoon Kevin with Sue, Keith with a trusting Ian, both in GP’s, David out again in his Solo and ‘Bim Bom’ out with Ben, the sartorial sailor. Both GPs revelled in the high winds and Kevin, expertly crewed by lightweight crew, won in their class. Bim Bom won easily in his race in spite of a number of dry capsizes (I would like to learn those!) and David was first over the line after one ditching, no doubt due to fatigue; a fine example from our Sailing Secretary of the People.
The Enterprisers watched!
High tea of super quality from Farida and Deidre.
After careful consultation with previous loyal participants and Chichester tide tables we have come up with a date for the aforementioned rally. There were few suitable late mid-day high waters on Saturdays so we have plumped for Saturday 9th September 2017 with HW springs at 1416. There are no sailing events on that day at HSC.
Good to be back Phill
