It was a very busy weekend at HSC with many members involved in organising and running a very successful ‘RYA Push the Boat Out’ event on Saturday afternoon followed by the Round the Island Race & Supper then a full day’s racing on Sunday. Several potential new members were taken out on the water as part of the plan to encourage participation in our sport and to show off the wonderful location and facilities we enjoy. Let’s hope we see some of them back with us soon.
Peter S and Duncan M then organised the traditional annual trip round at least one of our islands. The race was dominated by GPs (Mary/Derek, George/Chris, John/Phil, Trevor/Sue, Keith/Amelia) so they deservedly took most of the top places with a really close battle for positions. Ian/Sophie, Ben/Claude, Richard Cass & B-I-L in Ents, Brian in a Laser and a special mention to Ben P in his Topper who must have been one of the first to 3 tree Island in gusty conditions. A fantastic supper followed with the usual good cheer and a special rendition of Happy Birthday to Debs.
The Sunday Handicap race only saw two takers – Simon & Claude and the Master sporting a new reduced rig saving energy and also giving the rest of us a chance! Brian and Michaela were spotted rigging but sadly it seems that Cadenza Too may not be fit to take to the water again – or rather she’s taking on too much water to be fit.
The afternoon saw a much better turnout: George/Chris, Keith/Steve, Trevor/Sue, Mary/Derek, Kevin/Maddie in Geeps; Simon/Claude, Rob/Deirdre, Andrew/Peter of the Island in Merlins; Roger & Peter in the Handicap and only one Ent – Jane & Ra (don’t tell the Fleet Captain)! Really nice South Westerly, quite gusty at times. Trevor gave a great demo of rudderless sailing then Sue wondered why it all suddenly went quiet but he dried out eventually.
It was just like old times with Steve Harridge & Graham running the racing, the most delicious tea from Sue & Rosie & very efficient timekeeping from Nicky & Jo. News of an engagement between Tim & Lucy was celebrated with wine on the Harridge house and we all look forward to trying to explain yet another HSC relationship to confused new members.
A day out to Poole followed on Monday and will, no doubt, be reported elsewhere. The Rules Evening and Supper is on Thursday. See you there (unless you’re cruising the Greek Islands).
