Sail Chat: 12.06.2022

Fine day but some cloud which caused the forecast of a westerly to be a northerly at first. The breeze then switched back to a westerly with, at times, some strength. This gave for a nice beat up river and run down. Race Officer Chris Parker and Assistant Derek set an E and an I course to suit. Combatants were Simon, again on the Laser, Brian Comet, David Solo and me with Jane Enterprise. Good interesting sailing where tacking and gybing on the shifts was important for positions. David suffered a broken tiller extension and trailed as a result. Good battle between the Laser and Enterprise with the Laser winning by 10 seconds.

In the afternoon class racing Ian and Sophie and me and Jane out in the Enterprises, John and Sue and Keith with Susan in GP’s, in the Handicap fleet a welcome return of Nigel Solo, David Solo, James Comet, Brian Comet, Rob and Emily in the stately Wayfarer, the rather wet Sunshine Mirror had Paul and Llew, and the flying Laser again. By far the biggest fleet of the day. In the Merlin’s a really good showing with most welcome visitors Robyn and Tim Harms, Hywell with rather small crew, Bethan aged 7, one of his many Grand Children, needless to write the spinnaker went up! Also out was veteran traveller Stuart with Nicola and John with Daughter Livvy

At the lower end of the course off the Church Land and in the cut the wind came in quite strongly but at times was frustratingly fickle especially near the weeping willow upstream. Along with the considerable river traffic, of all kinds, one had to keep a very sharp lookout. I have never seen a bigger, raft like, paddle board with a multitude of youngsters on it. It of course spilled most of them, there were also some interesting shaped blow-ups which made tacking interesting.

As the Topper sails flapped shore bound, Honey and Ava enjoyed much aqua activity. No Seaweed this week?
Timekeepers were Trevor and Alison in the Morning and Ra with I no not who in the afternoon. Tea was a really delicious affair constructed by an absent Ellie (work), presented by Dad Andrew. Deidre helped serve and I think she made some cake too.

Bon voyage to Ben who is now in Greece with Sunsail as Dinghy Instructor and twin Sophie who is off to Italy for a boat delivery. Stay safe both. Brian then made some announcements, flanked by Ra, and we sang happy birthday‘s.

See you next week. Phill
