Strong
winds threaten to disrupt the Junior Regatta at Hampton Sailing
Club
On
Saturday 12th May 2007 Hampton Sailing Club held its annual Junior
Regatta. There were 8 toppers competing and 15 children aged between
4 and 15 were crewing and helming.
The
conditions were very testing with gusts of up to 20 mph. Before
the first start it soon became apparent that some of the dads
were going to have to helm to allow all the youngsters to sail.
The first race, which included having to sail around a course
and pick up balloons, was won by John Bell and Annabel
Cooper (6). During the race the gusts increased to between
25 30 mph and every boat capsizing except the winner. The
rescue boats were kept busy! Two more races were held for the
older children and these were won by Olivia Bell (15) sailing
single handed and John Bell again crewed by Annabel
Cooper.
The
final race involved the younger children and the boats had to
sail to and from the sailing club to the shore picking up sweets
on the way.
The
day was rounded off by a famous Hampton Sailing Club BBQ. Hywel
Bowen Perkins the Race Officer of the day awarded prizes to all
the children who had done so well in sailing is such windy and
testing conditions.

Topper
Worlds Hampton Team
Topper Worlds 2007
25th
to 31st August at Fraglia Vela Malcesine, Lake Garda, Italy
John Bell
from Hampton Sailing Club took the seniors trophy at the
Topper world championships held on Lake Garda in Italy. John who
is more usually seen helming a Merlin Rocket, for which he has
won many trophies, said that the transfer to the much smaller
Topper dinghy did cause him a number of problems but that the
experience of competing at the worlds was tremendous.
The Hampton
youth team who were also competing found that the step up to this
level of competition was very marked and amongst them the highest
finisher was to be one of Johns daughters Suzannah who finished
in 70th position out of the 175 competitors.
All agreed
that the chance to take part in the Worlds was brilliant, especially
as this was their first time competing at this level. The experience
would certainly stand them in good stead for the future.
